Pod-Stick Pod Sealants

Precision drone services was invited along to the first ever trials in the UK for applying a pod sealant product from a drone. Along with AutoSpray Systems and De Sangosse who are the suppliers of the pod sealant product, a successful trial was completed using different volumes per hectare.

The benefits of applying the Pod-stick by drone has many benefits. The main obvious one is that the crop isn’t touched by farm machinery so no crop damaged is caused during the application.

Flying above the crop of oil seed rape or beans produces a down draft. The down draft helps the pod sealant get down into the crop.

Oil seed rape is a tall crop and running through the crop with heavy machinery not only causes damage to the crop but it can also get tangled in the machinery causing delays and a messy time consuming job trying to free it up.

First Ever UK Trial of Using Pod Sealants with Drones

Precision drone services was delighted to be apart of a successful trial of spraying Pod-Stick sealant onto a crop of OSR. The trial was such a success that it was talked about in a recent production of Farmer Weekly

The trials were done by spraying different sections of the field at different rates per hectare. The podstick and water mix also contained a food safe illuminate die, under UV light this showed where the product stuck to the plant to show how affective it was. As the images show the 100 Litres per hectare worked the best and it had a full coverage right down towards the bottom of the stem.

To complete the trial day we got out the big John Deere sprayer to demonstrate to crop damage caused by one of these big machines running through the crop. The farmer where we held the trial estimates they loose 5 percent of the crop during the application of pod sealant. If we can find a solution to reduce this then everyone is a winner. At the end of the day OSR becomes so brittle before harvest its essential we do anything we can to avoid pod shatter or damage that causes the seeds to be lost
